The Valley
The Whistler valley was a traditional trading route of the Squamish and
Lil'wat native first nations long before the arrival of Europeans, and over time informally acquired the name "Whistler" due
to the call of the indigenous hoary marmot.
In the later part of the 19th century a trail was cut through the
valley linking Lillooet to the Seymour River, which was completed in 1877.
On completion the valley began to attract trappers and prospectors such
as John Millar and Henry Horstman, who established small camps in the area.
With the arrival of Mrytle and Alex Philip, who in 1914 purchased 10
acres of land on Alta Lake, and established a Lodge gave a boost, which brought recognition to the area.
The completion of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway greatly reducing
the travelling time and providing ease of access from both Vancouver and Whistler, helping to build the
reputation as the most popular vacation destination west of the Rockies.
Whistler was primarily a summer destination, with boating, fishing and
hiking among the most popular activities. Further lodges began to open on the valley lakes, and until the 1960s
this quiet area was without basic infrastructure.
In 1962 a proper highway was built linking Vancouver and Whistler, and
around that time four Vancouver businessmen saw the potential
of Whistler. After exploratory plans were laid down the building of the ski resort began, the Garibaldi Lift Company was formed and shares were sold, followed by the building of the initial development. The work
was completed in 1966, and Whistler Mountain opened to the public.
Bidding for the 1968 Winter
Olympics took place, but as history tells us that year the games went to Grenoble in France.
It has taken over 40years to establish the resort of Whistler and bring the
Winter Olympic Games, to Vancouver in
2010.
